DuBose shines big with winning essay

Jackson Academy senior Clara DuBose received an award for her essay in the statewide Voice of Democracy contest and with good cause. It is regrettable that there was not room in this week's issue to run her composition, because it is an excellent example of how there are still true grass roots values in America.

With the swirl of bureaucracy surrounding the debate on the war in Iraq these days, and the unbridled biased coverage by most of the major news media, it is refreshing to see that there are young people in our midst that are not listening to just one side of the debate. Awell-informed, balanced opinion can only be reached by drawing information from all sides of an argument. Clara has accomplished this and it is evident in her essay.

This bright student's excellent writing abilities indicate a strong educational background and the views in her essay reflect a strong moral upbringing. Education begins at home and that carries through to the outside world. The fostering of good values, creates good citizens in the end.

While it is not wrong to disagree on an issue, it is wrong to point fingers, place blame and voice a desired outcome without offering a viable solution to reaching that outcome. The war in Iraq has certainly turned into a bad situation for the United States, mainly because of the vast cultural differences between our country and the Middle East. DuBose makes a clear point of this in her essay. Too often that point is left out of the national media's comments when reporting on the situation there. Perhaps it has been lost to most of the American public because of this omission.

There will be no easy solution to the war, but, the struggle for freedom is never easy.
