U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby (RAla.) made several stops in Southwest Alabama, Saturday, Feb. 10, conducting town meetings in Chatom, Grove Hill and Monroeville.

A handful of Chatom residents turned out at Chatom Town Hall to meet with the senator and listen to his views on national issues.

At the forefront was the issue of the war in Iraq and the division it has caused, not only in Congress, but among much of the American public.

"Four years ago we had great military success in Iraq," began Shelby. "Since then the Bush administration has made some terrible mistakes. I wish we weren't there now, but we can't cut and run. To do that would be a grave mistake. If we move out fast without stability, Iran will be the winner. Iran is determined to get nuclear weapons and Russia is helping them get there."

He explained that 60 percent of the world's oil is in Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. "We will be in a struggle with the Muslim world for a long time," he said. "Some of the Democrats want to try to cut off funding for our troops. I am not for that. I am not sure what will happen, but those talking about ending our involvement in that part of the world have offered no alternative plan. The new commander of our forces there thinks he can make a difference. I hope he can."

Sen. Shelby (left) talked with new Washington County Probate Judge Charles Singleton about the county's economy prior to his town meeting at Chatom City Hall, Saturday morning.
Immigration Shelby touched briefly on the issue of illegal immigration. "In the current system we wouldn't have 12 million illegal immigrants here," he said. "I will not vote to give them amnesty. I am for legal immigration because immigrants bring energy to this country. But, we shouldn't reward illegal immigrants."

Health care costs

The senator took time to talk about the issue of the national health care system. "Offering national health insurance has been a big topic as of late," he said. "National health insurance has a lot of drawbacks. Health services will be rationed out and you won't be able to choose your doctor."

Other issues Shelby touched on included his continuous push for a national flat tax, the local and state economy, welfare reform and education.
