Tanker overturns after collision
An Ergon tanker truck loaded with caustic resin (black liquor) overturned and ruptured following a collision on Highway 43 in Antioch Feb. 8 shortly after 1 p.m. Top photo: Boise's Hazmat Team was called to the scene and made an earthen dam to contain the spillage. Neither the truck driver, David Smith of Jackson, or the driver of the 1997 Chevrolet SUV that the tanker struck (left photo), Leslie Lewis of Leroy, were injured. It took several hours and considerable manpower to clean up the spill due to the location of utility lines where the truck, a 2000 model Peterbilt, overturned. Responding to the scene to help were Antioch and Salitpa firefighters, Clarke County EMA, Clarke-Mobile Counties Gas, McVay Water System, U.S. Environmental Services, Pitt and Sons Wrecker, Ergon Trucking, Southwest Alabama Construction, Jackson Police, Clarke County Sheriff's Department and Alabama State Troopers.
