Aggies to host area tournament
While Jackson received first place, Thomasville earned second, Escambia County grabbed third and Monroe County finished in fourth. With those standings, Escambia County will face Thomasville at 5:30 p.m. in Jackson, followed by Jackson and Monroe County at 7. "The area tournaments are set up where you can go winless in the region during the season, but grab one win in the tournament and you're in the playoffs," said Head Coach Marcus Caster. "We just have to make sure we are ready on Friday." The two teams that come out of Area 1 will face Area 2 winner and runner-up next week. The Area 2 tournament is being held in Brewton at T.R. Miller High School. Andalusia is the second seeded team while Hillcrest-Evergreen and W.S. Neal hold the three and four spots, respectively.
On Saturday before a record crowd in Jackson, the Aggies took a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Clarke County Bulldogs 53-48. Approximately 1,300 people filled the gym to watch the rivalry game take place. Corey Besteda knocked down 11 points for Jackson while Demarcus Besteda added 10 points. Justin Burroughs pulled off 22 points while DeForest Tate and Ben Burroughs added 10 points.
"We are taking advantage of this week of practice and this week to prepare prior to the area tournament," said Caster. "We hope to be able to fix the mental errors we suffered from the losses that occurred this past weekend against Hillcrest- Evergreen and Clarke County. We must focus on protecting the ball and learning how to close out ball games. "We must stay mentally focused on what we are doing. Our area is a toss-up and whichever team shows up will be the team that goes on to subregionals next week. Like stated before, we must stay focused."
Jackson also took three losses to Clarke County, took two losses to Satsuma, Hillcrest- Evergreen and Williamson, who is ranked No. 1 in the Class 5A polls and took one loss to UMSWright, McGill-Toolen and Thomasville.
Coach Keith Mcguire's JV boys had a winning season and a 13-7 overall record. They ended their season in winning fashion with a 41-40 win over Clarke County on Saturday. The Jackson High School Lady Aggies dropped their final two regular season games this past week, both by five points. In the first game, the Jaguars of Hillcrest-Evergreen defeated the Lady Aggies 39-34. Shanavia Ervin hit 13 points for Jackson. The girl's were 9-of-21 from the free-throw line against the Jags. Erica Moore paced Clarke County with 28-of-50 points. Jackson will travel to Escambia County on Thursday to face the Thomasville Tigers at 5:30 p.m. in the first round of the 4A Area 1 girls tournament. Escambia County and Monroe County will play at 7 on the same night. In the opposing bracket for the girls, Andalusia is the host school as they grabbed the No. 1 seed, followed by T.R. Miller at the second seed, Hillcrest- Evergreen with the three seed and W.S. Neal is the fourth seed in the girl's bracket as well. "We have to make sure we are ready on Thursday," said Jackson girl's coach Trinnia McKenzie. "Our girls are ready to go to Escambia County and get a win in the first round." The girl's area championship is on Saturday in Escambia County while the boy's area championship will be in Jackson on Monday.
If the teams were to advance to the championships, the subregional for girls would be on Thursday, Feb. 15, while the boys would be on Friday, Feb. 16. In order to host the subregional, the teams would have to win the area tournament. In the event of being runner-up, they would travel to the team's court who wins the Area 2 tournament.
