Woman dies in crash

A Mt. Vernon woman was killed in a one-car crash on Red Fox Road between Villard Byrd Road and the Washington County line at around 6:15 a.m., Feb. 4.

Cassandra Carpenter Rivers, 23, was traveling east on Red Fox Road in a 2007 GMC Sierra when she failed to negotiate a curve and left the roadway. The vehicle overturned ejecting Rivers and a passenger, David Rivers, 25, also of Mt. Vernon.

Cassandra Rivers was pronounced dead at the scene and David Rivers was transported to USA Medical Center in Mobile for what was described as minor injuries.

According to the Alabama State Troopers'Office, the crash may have been alcohol related and speed appears to have been a contributing factor.
