JA girls vie for area title while boys struggle
Tuesday, the JA team traveled to Camden where Wilcox defeated them 75-40. Williams hit 14 points and Matthew Roberson scored 12 points. Marengo outscored the Eagles 56-39 on Friday at JA. Jones had 14 points, Williams had 13 and David Hughston scored 10 points. In JV action, the boys lost to Marengo 38-17. Matthew Roberson and Will Wright each scored 5 points. On Friday, Jan. 19 the JA junior high boys team defeated Sparta 31-24 for their third win of the season. Leading scorers for the Eagles were Sam Scott with 9 points, Matthew Roberson with 8 and Will Wright added 6 points. The boys team played in the Marengo Tournament earlier in the season where Roberson received all-tournament. In a summery of the season, individual scoring leaders were Roberson, 89 points, Dustyn Moseley, 57 points, Scott, 48 points and Wright with 33. Other team members are Brandon Bradley, Jon Harvey, Victor Tipper, John Richard Weaver, Cole Harrell, Daniel Heath and Adam Wheless. Their season record is 3-11 with four games remaining on their schedule. The Jackson Academy Lady Eagles are tied with Sparta for first place in area play. The tiebreaker was played Wednesday, but results were unavailable at press time. The ladies defeated two area teams earlier in the week. On Monday, Escambia lost to JA 43-40, with Evin Bowling scoring 20 points, followed by Laura Rotch with 10. On Tuesday, JA downed Wilcox in another close game, 34-32. Bowling scored 12 points and Kayla Coleman added 9. In what was possibly their best game of the season, the Lady Eagles soundly defeated Marengo 57-31 on Friday. JA jumped out to a 20-10 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Bowling had 15 points while Coleman and Rotch added 9 each.
In the JV girls' game against Marengo, JA won with less than a minute to go by a three-pointer by Maggie Bowling. The final score was 24-22. Bowling finished with 11 points and Nancy Evans added 6 points.
