Leroy boys grab second at county, girls come up short

The Leroy boys found their way to the county championship this past week while the girls took and early exit, losing to McIntosh.

Coach Henry's guys defeated Fruitdale on Tuesday, Jan. 23 57-49 with Joe Fields and Charles Williams both knocking down 16 points. Fruitdale was led by Bubba Clay with 16 points as well.

On Thursday, the Bears pulled off a semi-final win over the Washington County Bulldogs 52-47. The Bears were led by Jerome Taylor with 15, followed by Patrick Rivers with 13 and Williams with 12 points. Washington County was led by Kyle Pennington with 13 points.

In the championship game on Saturday night, the Demons of McIntosh scaled the Bears 71-54. The Demons had four guys in double digits, including Quinton Thomas with 22 points. Leroy was led by Rivers with 21 points and Williams with 16.

Coffeeville came into town on Monday night and took a win away from Leroy 67-62. The Panthers were led by Michael Thomas and Jeremy Pugh, both with 17 points. The Bears were paced by Williams with 16 points, Taylor with 12 points and Justin Jones with 11.

To start the county tournament, the girls took a hard 87- 37 loss to the Demons of McIntosh. They also picked up a win at home against the Panthers of Coffeeville on Monday night 61-30. Ada Collins led the Lady Bears with 16 points, followed by Ashley Snow with 15 and Chaniquia McMorris with 12. Coffeeville had five players with 6 points.

Leroy (7-15, 3-3) will travel to Coffeeville on Thursday night and to McIntosh on Friday before beginning area tournament play.
