Hunter airlifted after being shot

A hunter was airlifted to a Mobile hospital, Tuesday, after being shot in what is being investigated as a hunting accident.

According to Washington County Sheriff's Department Captain Terry Beasley, deputies Kesler Weaver Sr. and A.C. Howell responded to the scene of the shooting near the Charity Chapel area between 2:30 and 3 p.m.

"The conservation department has taken over the investigation since it was a hunting accident and occurred on a game reserve," said Beasley.

He said information gathered by deputies at the scene indicated that Joe Patrick was shot while another hunter was attempting to cut off some dogs that were being used in the hunt. "It's unclear at this point who actually shot him," said Beasley. He added that no one has come forward to say he or she was the shooter.

Patrick received several wounds from a shotgun and was airlifted by LifeFlite helicopter to USA Medical Center for treatment. According to reports on one of the local television stations Wednesday morning, he was listed in stable condition.

Beasley said it appeared that the victim had been shot with buckshot and had some pretty severe wounds. "It is my understanding that you're not even supposed to be hunting with buckshot this time of year," he added.
