Clarification was meant to put issue to rest

A couple of weeks ago The South Alabamian ran a clarification concerning the issue of Get Lost In Jackson and the fact that the top loser for the 2006 program did not receive the top prize of $1,000. Instead, the top prize was awarded to the winner of a drawing.

In 2006, when we printed the original article, due to a misunderstanding of the information we received, we incorrectly stated that the top loser would receive the $1,000 prize. Had we been aware of our mistake at the time it occurred, we would certainly have corrected it then.

The South Alabamian staff does its best to present factual information to its readers. When we find we have erred, we make every effort to make corrections and clarify whatever mistake was made.

Due to this misunderstanding, we have received several letters and e-mails making derogatory statements about the Jackson Health Council (JHC) and the Get Lost In Jackson program. The fact is that the JHC is an advocate of good health and the Get Lost In Jackson program is an effort to raise awareness to the need for people to get healthier and maintain a healthy lifestyle. The program being free to those who wish to participate is proof of that and we commend the JHC for its efforts.

We here at The South Alabamian apologize to anyone who is upset about this issue, but the fact remains that the information published at the beginning of 2006 was incorrect and now that it has been brought to our attention we wish to set the record straight.

We encourage people who wish to participate in this year's Get Lost In Jackson or any other program that promotes good health to do so without hesitation. It's time to put this issue to rest.
