Jackson boys 5-0 in 4A Area 1 play

The Jackson High School boys basketball team went 2-0 this week with big area wins over Monroe and Escambia counties.

The Aggies (14-9, 5-0) knocked down Monroe County 63-57. Corey Besteda paced Jackson with 16 points, trailed by Demarcus Besteda with 10. Jamil Stanten had 11 for the Tigers.

In the week finale, the Aggies held off a late rally by the Blue Devils of Escambia County to win 83-81. Recardio Dread led the Aggies with 18 points, followed by Corey Besteda with 15. Frank Taylor paced Escambia County with 24 points, followed by Kingston Kraft with 19 points.

Coach Marcus Caster's squad will host the area tournament if they got a win over Thomasville on Tuesday. The results were unavailable at press time.

Following the county tournament this week, the Aggies will host the Jaguars of Hillcrest-Evergreen on Feb. 2, followed by Clarke County on Feb 3.

For sub-regionals, the Aggies are paired up with Area 2, which includes Andalusia, Hillcrest-Evergreen, T.R. Miller and W.S. Neal. The Aggies must win in the opening round of the area tournament, in which they will face either Escambia County or Monroe County.

The winner of the area tournament will host the subregional game, while the runner up will travel to winner of the Area 2 Tournament, which will possibly be played at T.R. Miller.
