Jackson boys 5-0 in 4A Area 1 play

      The Jackson High School boys basketball team went 2-0 this week with big area wins over Monroe and Escambia counties. The Aggies (14-9, 5-0) knocked down Monroe County 63-57. Corey Besteda paced Jackson with 16 points, trailed by Demarcus Besteda with 10. Jamil Stanten had 11 for the Tigers.

Jackson's Lady Aggies take tough area defeat

      The Jackson High School Lady Aggies had a week with a couple of area games, including one with a win. When Monroe County came to town, the Lady Aggies handed the Tigers a 56-50 defeat. Alexandra James punched in 22 points for Jackson. Kelly Murphy knocked down 20 for the Lady Tigers.

JA junior high girls in state tournament at Wilcox Aca.
      The Lady Eagles junior high girls played in the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) state tournament at Wilcox Academy on Saturday. They fell to Springwood in their first game 37-22. Kayla Lowery led the JA team with 9 points. Lowery was also named to the all-tournament team.

Dixie League announces sign-up dates
      Dixie League Sign-ups will be Feb. 6, 8 and 15 from 4 until 6:30 p.m. at the concession stand at the park. Those wishing to sign up must bring their birth cetificate and must not turn 15 before May 1. There is a $65 fee to sign up.

Leroy boys have rough week of play

      The Leroy varsity boys suffered a tough week with four losses, including two in the area. Leroy traveled to Bayside last Tuesday, Jan. 16, where they were defeated 62-60 in double overtime.

      The Leroy Lady Bears went 2- 2 over the week with wins at Flomaton and at home against Southern Choctaw. The girls started off the week losing 71-24 at Bayside Academy. Kendra Koins and Chaniquia McMorris each had 7 points for Leroy. Bayside was led by Caroline Gill with 31 points.

      On Friday, the Lady Eagles lost their first area game to Sparta 54-41. Nataline Moseley had 11 points while Kayla Coleman added 10.       Washington County High School pitcher Kyle Dees signed with Okaloosa- Walton Community College on Thursday morning, Jan. 18 for baseball. In 2006, Dees made 10 appearances, earning three wins and two losses.
