United Way looking for outstanding volunteers in Washington County
Individuals in the county who represent a spirit of volunteerism may be nominated by an individual, agency, club, church or organization to receive these awards. According to Awards Committee members, many of the nominations have come from individuals in the past. "Churches and civic organizations are encouraged to nominate their most outstanding volunteers to receive these awards, and to seek requests for nominations in bulletins, newsletters and at upcoming meetings and events," Awards Committee Chairperson Mel Ann Sullivan said. The deadline for submitting nominations is Feb. 20. Nomination forms are available from any committee member or by calling United Way at 251/433-3624. An electronic version of the form may be obtained by e-mailing requests to: msullivan@firstusbank.com. Completed forms can be delivered personally to Jean Williams, Wayne Blackwell, Richmond Chaney, Peggy Tew, Pat Dickey, Kay Hawkins or by mailing to Mel Ann Sullivan, 688 Beasley Road, Millry, AL 36558. Completed forms can also be faxed to (251) 843-2211. According to committee member Richmond Chaney, there are many who are deserving of these awards. "Help us identify, from your community, who they are," Chaney said. United Way of Southwest Alabama's 2006 campaign efforts in Washington County raised awareness and $354,920.00. The Washington County campaign was led by Inez Younge and the assistance of excellent volunteers. "Our volunteers, as usual, stepped up to the plate once again to help raise money to be used in our own communities," Campaign Chairperson Inez Younge said. "I want to say a special 'thank you' not only to the volunteers who helped make my job easier, but also to everyone who generously supports United Way."
These United Way awards will be presented at the upcoming annual meeting for Washington County United Way. For more information, contact any committee member or Patsy Herron, United Way of Southwest Alabama, Inc., 218 St. Francis Street, Mobile, AL 36602, or 251/433-3624.
