Local and state officials gathered to break ground at the site of a future new public health facility in Chatom on Friday, Jan. 12.

Ray Williams, project architect with Barganier Davis Sims Architect Associates of Birmingham told the crowd that this new building would contain 10,000 square feet and consist of five components: an entrance area, a clinic area with five examining rooms and a lab, a community room for use by local organizations, a home health area, and an environmental suite. The architectural style is Southern Venacular, with slopped roofs and covered porches.

Williams also told those assembled that the final documents should be complete in three weeks and the construction is expected to take three months when it begins.

Ruth Underwood, area administrator, who served as mistress of ceremony, said that the Washington County Health Department has 53 employees and badly needs added space.

In one of his last official acts, Washington County Probate Judge John Henry Armstrong said, "This is a special day for Washington County and we thank the Alabama Public Health Care Authority Board."
