A special farewell ceremony is planned for longtime Washington County Sheriff William Wheat, Sunday, Jan. 14, 2 p.m., at the Chatom Community Center.
Wheat has served as the county's sheriff for 32 years, making him one of the longest serving sheriffs in the state. He chose not to seek another term in the office and will be replaced by Richard Stringer, who was elected this past year.
Sunday's special event will feature several speakers who will discuss Wheat's years of service to the county.
