A Calvert home, located at 95 Widow Lane, was lost to fire shortly after noon, Sunday, Jan. 7, with three area fire departments responding to battle the blaze.

Fairford Fire Department was the first to be paged out, and by the time firefighters arrived on the scene, 60 percent of the home was already engulfed, according to Fairford Assistant Chief Chris Murphy. Also responding were McIntosh and Mt. Vernon fire departments.

Murphy said it is believed the cause of the fire was electrical, with flames filling the attic area of the residence and spreading from there. Firefighters were on the scene for approximately three hours, but were unable to save the home.

An electrical crew from Alabama Power arrived on the scene around 1:40 p.m. to disconnect the power to the residence, while firefighters continued their efforts. Murphy stated that at approximately 3:30 p.m. severe weather hampered the departments from continuing to fight the fire.
