JMS shows off new cafeteria
Several area educators and other members of the community were given the opportunity to visit the new facility during an open house, Friday, Jan. 5, and sample some of the cuizine offered to the students who eat lunch there daily. They were also allowed to view the stateof the-art equipment used to prepare the food. "This project was years in the planning," said Child Nutrition Program Director, Gwen O. Powell during her opening remarks to those in attendance. "We are proud to have this new facility. The new equipment will hopefully offer more variety to our students, faculty and staff. I want to express special thanks to Mr. (Gerald) Stephens for his vision in helping us achieve this and to the Clarke County Board of Education for their support."
During his remarks, Clarke County Superintendent of Education Gerald Stephens said, "Gwen Powell has made great improvements to our child nutrition program." He recognized past and present staff and board of education members and thanked them for their efforts in seeing the project through to completion. "In everything we do, I stress teamwork," said Stephens. "I don't believe you can do anything without it." He also recognized Jackson's mayor and city council members for their contributions. "It is evident that the people in leadership here support education. Because of their continued support we will continue to build new facilities in Jackson. It's all about the students, and the leaders in Jackson share a vision for the future." In a short statement to the crowd, JMS Principal Jessie Taylor said, "I appreciate Mr. Stephens, the board of education and the city council for their support in obtaining this wonderful facility." Those attending the event were then treated to a variety of foods prepared in the new kitchen. The meal included salad, pizza, chicken, rice, grilled cheese sandwiches and cake.
Monday, Powell said the new cafeteria is one of the most up-to-date facilities in the county, boasting the latest equipment available. She added that while school is in session approximately 13,000 meals are served each month.
