Punish irresponsible parents who allow teenagers to drink

Over the past year or so we've read repeated stories in the Mobile Press Register of teenage parties in Baldwin and Mobile Counties, parties where drinking was condoned, or at least tolerated, by parents or other adults- often with the grown folks ending up being charged when the events got out of hand.

Now, according to Jackson Police Chief Charles Burge, there are reports of similar teen drinking parties right here.

Termed "open house parties", Burge explained, "We have been told that parents have allowed teenagers to gather at their residences and consume alcoholic beverages with the parents in attendance. Apparently this was quite common during the Christmas break."

The teenagers can be blamed, of course, but we remember our teen years. The ones who really should be held accountable are the parents and/or other adults who are so irresponsible they allow such activities to go on with their apparent approval.

These "so-called" adults are the ones who need to be severely fined and jailed.
