Area Obituaries Roberta O. Chastain Roberta O. Chastain, a native of Chatom and a homemaker, died Dec. 28, 2006 at her residence in Jackson at the age of 82. She is survived by a son, John J. Chastain of Jackson; daughter, Julie C. (Rickie) Clanton of Coffeeville and sister, Marion O. Brown of Chatom. She was preceded in death by her husband Joe L. Chastain. The graveside service was Dec. 30 at Pine Crest Cemetery in Jackson with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing. Donations may be made to the Coffeeville Public Library Fund for the purpose of purchasing books for the proposed new library. Edward Regia Dunagan Edward Regia Dunagan, 85, died Dec. 31, 2006 at an area facility. A native of Bethel and a resident of Jackson, he was a member of Forest Avenue Baptist Church in Jackson. He was retired from the U.S. Army where he served in Germany and Japan during World War II. He is survived by a son, Donald Dunagan of Jackson; stepdaughter, Sallie Shields of Jackson; brother, Clanton Dunagan of Grand Bay; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The funeral service was Jan. 3, 2007 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson with the Rev. Carter Bates officiating. Interment was in Trinity Memorial Gardens in Jackson. Pallbearers were Gary Counselman, Loyde Orso, Micheal Huckabee, Jim Lolley, Benny Counselman and Johnny Counselman. Kenneth Cameron Newman Jackson resident and native Texan, Kenneth Cameron Newman, passed away at the Mobile Infirmary in the early morning hours of Dec. 26, 2006 after a protracted battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in 1925 in Floresville, Texas in the heart of the Hill Country, Mr. Newman served his country proudly as a Senior Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. Although he was stationed around the world during his 20 plus years of service during both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, it was his assignment in the late 1940s at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss. that changed his life as that was when he met his future wife of 58 years, Mary Blanche Deas. Mr. Newman made his home in Jackson since 1975 where he worked at various positions with the city government, most notably with the water department. He was a proud father of two even prouder sons, Mark A. Newman, formerly of New York City, N.Y. and recently of Gulf Shores and David C. Newman of Bedford, Texas. Mr. Newman is survived by his wife, Mary D. Newman of Jackson; his daughter-in-law, Deborah Newman and grandson, Kristopher Newman, both of Bedford. He is also survived by two brothers, Ellis Newman of Kerrville, Texas and Don Newman of Las Vegas, Nev. and a sister, Willette Jerden of Austin, Texas, not to mention brothers-and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and scores of devoted friends and loved ones who will always remember Mr. Newman as a man who led an exemplary and honorable life and who will be remembered for his priceless and endearing sense of humor. A visitation was scheduled for Friday, Dec. 29 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at McCann’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Jackson where Mr. Newman was an active member. The Rev. Earl Watson and the Rev. Joe McKinney officiated. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to any charities or organizations that serve our nation’s veterans. Arrangements were directed by Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson. (pd.) Eugene Harold Quiggle Eugene Harold Quiggle died at W.F. Green Veterans Home in Bay Minette on Dec. 30, 2006. A resident of Fruitdale and formerly of Demopolis, he served his country in the Coast Guard in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a retired cattleman, farmer and real estate salesman. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Myrtle Coaker Quiggle of Fruitdale and many cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends. A graveside service was conducted on Jan. 2, 2007 at Grace- Williams Cemetery in Fruitdale with Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom directing. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the W.F. Green Veterans Home, 300 Faulkner Dr., Bay Minette, AL or the Fruitdale Union Chapel Methodist Church, P.O. Box 422, Fruitdale, AL 36539. Otis Will Jenkins Otis Will Jenkins, 66, a native of Washington County and a resident of Chatom, died Dec. 22, 2006 at Washington County Infirmary Hospital. A retired skidder operator for a logging company, he was a member of Cooper Lewis C.M.E. of Chatom. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Towner Jenkins of Chatom; stepmother, Darlene Jenkins of Monticello, Miss.; three daughters, Theresa Jenkins of Citronelle, Ashly Clay of Deer Park and LaQuisha Towner of Chatom; nine sons, Michael Jenkins, Lamar Jenkins, Otis Jenkins Jr., Tony Jenkins, David Jenkins and Bernard Jenkins, all of Flint, Mich., Otis D. Henderson of Utah, Terrance Clay of Deer Park and Spencer Towner of Miami, Fla.; four sisters, Dorothy Tyler and Lela Tyler, both of Brookhaven, Miss., Benetta Coleman and Emma Jenkins, both of Monticello; three brothers, Vernon Jenkins, Lonnie Jenkins and Jimmiy Jenkins, all of Brookhaven; 23 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral service was Dec. 30 at Cooper Lewis C.M.E. Church in Chatom. Burial was in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Chatom with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing. Susie Owes Susie Owes, 89, a native of Morvin and a resident of Jackson, died Dec. 28, 2006 at Jackson Medical Center. A homemaker and member of St. Union Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson where she served in the Missionary Society, the senior choir and the Morning View Chapter 101 of Jackson. She is survived by a grandson, Larry Robinson of Jackson and a host of nieces and nephews. The funeral service was at St. Union Baptist Church in Jackson on Jan. 3. Interment was in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Jackson with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing. Mae Theresa Smith McInnis Mae Theresa Smith McInnis died Dec. 28, 2006 in Jonesboro, La. at the age of 83. A native of Burkesville, Ky., a resident of Quitman, La., and formerly of Jackson, she was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon McInnis and son, Charles McInnis. The graveside service was in Mt. Olive East Cemetery in Bienville, La. on Jan. 1 with the Rev. Gene Cumpton officiating and Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro directing. Survivors include a daughter, Theresa (Johnny Mac) McMillan of Quitman; four grandchildren, Dana Koonce, Shawn McMillan, Shelley White and Roxanne Mott and 10 great-grandchildren. Commer Pace The funeral service for Commer Pace, a native and resident of Coffeeville, was Dec. 30, 2006 at Union Baptist Church in Coffeeville. The Rev. Vayton Chapman, pastor, officiated. Burial was in the Pace Cemetery in Coffeeville with Andrews Funeral Home of Jackson directing. Mr. Pace, a retired logger, was 83. He was a member of Union Baptist Church in Coffeeville where he served as a deacon, sang in the choir and was a Sunday School teacher. He received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy where he was a Seaman 1st Class.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille Williams Pace of Coffeeville; two sons, Thaddeus Wayne (Margaret) Pace of Atmore and David Lavelle (Arletha) Pace of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Christina Maneice (Lewis) Trammel of Nashville, Tenn. and Doris (Reginald) Morris of Coffeeville; two sisters, Creola Hickerson of Coffeeville and Nellie (Titus) Blade of Chicago, Ill.; brother, Super (Arizona) Pace of Tuskegee; nine grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lola Fluker and Dube Pace.
