Coachwhip snake killed

2007-09-06 / News

James Young of Bladen Springs recently killed this Coachwhip snake in Monroe County near Perdue Hill. The snake measured approximately 6 ft. in length. Coachwhips look like big thick pieces of rope or bullwhip. They might be considered mean snakes, as they bite at the slightest provocation. They are not venomous, but they will bite and have big mouth full of teeth. Coloration varies substantially in the linear direction, that is, from from head to tail. The head and first half or so of the body is usually charcoal black. The black transitions from black to tan for the remainder of the body and tail.
