BOE prepares for new school year
      Clarke County school personnel are preparing for the opening of school. In his report to the county board of education July 25, Superintendent Gerald Stephens said that the Teacher Institute will be at 9 a.m. on Aug. 6 at Grove Hill Elementary School. There will be technology training for professional staff Aug. 7 and 8 at both Grove Hill Elementary and Jackson High School.

Preparations under way for fall Litter Awareness Week
      During its July 19 meeting, the Clarke County Citizens Against Litter (CCCAL) committee began preparations for its fall Litter Awareness Week, which is set for Sept. 24-29.

Self-defense class for women offered by JPD
      Jackson Police Officer Arvis Slack will teach a basic selfdefense course for women, free of charge, Aug. 14-16. The class is sponsored by the Jackson Police Department and will be taught in the department's new training room located inside the old Alabama Power building beside the newly constructed police station downtown. Each class will last from 6:30-9:30 p.m.

Buy your own part of new park
      The Pine City Park Committee is selling pickets to surround the "tot lot" area of the new playground to be built in Jackson. The pickets are made of a plastic and wood composite and can be routed to include names of people, families, businesses, etc. The cost of one picket is $25, which includes routing for up to 17 letters.

Suspect sought in drive-by shooting
      A suspect in a drive-by shooting July 26 in Thomasville remains at large. Christopher Pugh, 20, who lives on Old Highway 5 in Thomasville, walked across the highway from his home to check his mailbox.

HealthActions physical therapy celebrates 25 years of service
      HealthActions physical therapy conducted a celebration Monday, July 30, to mark 25 years of service to Jackson and the surrounding areas. According to Health Supervisor Betty Beard, HealthActions, which has been in its existing building at 1711 College Avenue for 11 years, offers the services of three fully certified physical therapists.

Salvation Army has served Jackson for more than a year
      The Jackson Salvation Army Thrift Store recently marked its first full year of service to the community and looks forward to continuing to offer used goods at a reduced price to its customers while helping those in need. The store is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is located downtown at 213 Commerce Street.

Harvey enjoys job as JPD investigator
      Richard Harvey, who has worked as a police officer in a variety of capacities since 1995, said he beginning to settle into his most recent position as investigator for the Jackson Police Department (JPD). Harvey took over the job of investigator earlier this year while his predecessor Mark Harrell was out for surgery.
