Clarke County school personnel are preparing for the opening of school. In his report to the county board of education July 25, Superintendent Gerald Stephens said that the Teacher Institute will be at 9 a.m. on Aug. 6 at Grove Hill Elementary School. There will be technology training for professional staff Aug. 7 and 8 at both Grove Hill Elementary and Jackson High School. More ... During its July 19 meeting, the Clarke County Citizens Against Litter (CCCAL) committee began preparations for its fall Litter Awareness Week, which is set for Sept. 24-29. More ... Jackson Police Officer Arvis Slack will teach a basic selfdefense course for women, free of charge, Aug. 14-16. Each class will last from 6:30-9:30 p.m. More ... The Pine City Park Committee is selling pickets to surround the "tot lot" area of the new playground to be built in Jackson. The pickets are made of a plastic and wood composite and can be routed to include names of people, families, businesses, etc. The cost of one picket is $25, which includes routing for up to 17 letters. Jackson Kiwanis Club President Evan Carden (left) recently presented the club's annual donation to the Alpha Pregnancy Center in Jackson. Accepting the donation is the center's director Diane Pruitt. According to Health Supervisor Betty Beard, HealthActions, which has been in its existing building at 1711 College Avenue for 11 years, offers the services of three fully certified physical therapists. The Jackson Salvation Army Thrift Store recently marked its first full year of service to the community and looks forward to continuing to offer used goods at a reduced price to its customers while helping those in need. Richard Harvey, who has worked as a police officer in a variety of capacities since 1995, said he beginning to settle into his most recent position as investigator for the Jackson Police Department (JPD).
