Rep. Keahey wants to audit governor's plane rides
      State Rep. Marc Keahey of Grove Hill has introduced a resolution in the Alabama House of Representatives that seeks an official audit of Gov. Bob Riley's use of state aircraft.

Clarke County Sheriff's Report
      Clarke County lawmen made a number of arrests for alcohol related offenses during the past week. The offenses included DUIs, public intoxication, violation of the prohibition law, illegal use of alcohol and contributing alcohol to a minor.

      As the weather gets warmer, the snakes begin to crawl. Luther Williams Jr. of Jackson can attest to this. He killed this big rattlesnake on Sullivan Road Monday, April 30. The snake was 5 feet long with 8 rattles and a button.

Public invited to 'Design Day' for new city park
      The public is invited to attend a "Design Day Celebration" for Jackson's new city park, May 8, from 7-8 p.m. at the Gillmore Elementary School gym. This event gives people of all ages the opportunity to give their input on what they want to see included in the design of the park.

Promise Theater and Performing Arts Center offering summer program
      Clarke County's new cultural arts center, The Promise Theater and Performing Arts Center, has several events planned for the summer. Summer Drama Camp registration began May 1. Weekly sessions will include beginner acting, advanced acting, creative dramatics, storytelling, acting for musical theater, theater dance, voice and movement classes, acting for the camera and modeling.

Ciba sponsors performances in Washington County schools
      Ciba Specialty Chemicals sponsored performances by the Silverwood Quartet of the Mobile Symphony in Washington County schools, April 30 and May 1. The Silverwood Quartet, a string and flute ensemble, performed for students at Leroy, McIntosh, Fruitdale, Chatom and Millry. The ensemble featured flutist Andra Bohnet, violinist Tom Morley, violist Jonathan Clark and cellist Barbara Gabriel.

      The Wilcox Historical Society will sponsor a tour of homes, churches, schools and other historic sites in Wilcox County on Saturday, May 12 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Places on tour represent just a few of the historic buildings and sites that are part of the heritage and rich history of this area of the Black Belt.

      The Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce's Spring Clean-Up was a success this year, according to Director LaShaunda Holly The clubs/organizations and businesses that picked up litter on Saturday included over 100 participants that collected over 1,500 pounds of garbage.

Deputies nab suspect in two-county forgery case
      Deputies from the Washington County Sheriff's Department apprehended a Wagarville woman, Friday, April 27, suspected of writing forged checks from Fulton to McIntosh. According to investigating deputy Ronnie Sullivan, Christy Powell, 31, was arrested following the execution of a search warrant at her residence and is currently being held in the Washington County Jail on $30,000 bond.

Sparks addresses WashCo constituents
      Commissioner of Agriculture, Ron Sparks was the guest of the Washington County Democratic Committee on Monday, April 30th at the Chatom Community Center where he spoke to the Washington County Cattlemen's Association. Before the commissioner spoke Elaine Beech, local school board member, made an appeal for the school millage that will be voted on in the special election on June 5.

Big steel mill would straddle Mobile-Washington county line
      State and regional leaders continue to remain optimistic that a giant steel mill will locate on a large site straddling the Mobile and Washington counties' line. The German steelmaker ThyssenKrupp AG is expected to announce sometime this month whether it will build a $2.9 billion, 2,700-worker mill in south Alabama or south Louisiana.
