No explanation for Virginia Tech tragedy
      The massacre of 32 innocent college students at Virginia Tech University by a deranged Tech student is terrible. My heart goes out to the parents who had children killed there Monday. My daughter, Maggie, is only 8 and in elementary school but I try to relate these students to her. They were older, in their late teens and early 20s but to a parent a child is always a child.

Turn lane for Highway 43 welcome news
      welcome news The announcement last week that the Alabama Department of Transportation will construct a center turn lane on U.S. Highway 43 in north Jackson is welcomed news, both from a traffic and safety viewpoint and as an aid to business expansion and development along the corridor.

Apology resolution likely to pass because legislators fear 'pro-slavery' brand
      State Sen. Hank Sanders, DSelma, has introduced a resolution calling on the Alabama Legislature to issue an apology for slavery but it has not had the impact he desired. Sanders said he felt the resolution would "speed the healing process" among blacks and whites, but the word "healing" didn't come to mind when the measure was debated in the Legislature.

      As technology has advanced so too have the opportunities for thieves who seek to steal a person's very identity. Identity theft is a frightening crime that is becoming more and more common. When a person's identity is stolen, their reputation can be destroyed, their sense of security shattered, and their life savings completely wiped out.

People should seriously consider WashCo landfill
      Dear Editor: The time has come to "put up or shut up" with the matter of developing a needed public landfill in our southern region of the state. As you know, we did finalize a relationship through legal agreements with Advance Disposal Services (ADS) of Alabama prior to my leaving office in January.
