Looking for a bright and prosperous ’07

It is hard to believe that another year has slipped away and we will soon be seven years into the 21st Century. It seems like only yesterday that we were worried about all sorts of computer calamities and other woes when we hit the double-aught year.

Locally, Jackson seems to be sailing along on a pretty even keel. Walgreens has announced that it will build a pharmacy here and other new businesses are also being planned.

The city’s sales taxes and other revenues indicate that the economy is good and the money is a source for many worthwhile projects to benefit citizens.

City leaders and industrial board members are working on the new industrial park as well as other projects.

Clarke and Washington counties and the rest of southwest Alabama have mostly good marks too. The new Louisiana Pacific oriented strand board (OSB) mill just south of Thomasville will have a big impact on the entire area, including Jackson.

Rumors of possible new industrial plants and other developments to the south can benefit the Pine City too. We expect our area to even feel some positive vibes from the new Dale Earnhardt Jr. Speedway complex that will be built in Mobile County. It will likely draw racing fans from all over the southeastern United States.

Of course, everything is not completely rosy and we realize there are many, many areas that we can work on. But, all in all, we think our little corner of the state is doing as well or better than many rural areas. We attribute that to good leadership—not just from elected officials but from everyday citizens who take an active role in helping with a variety of projects and issues.

We here at The South Alabamian appreciate this leadership and we appreciate all of our readers and our advertisers. Your support enables us to bring you this product every week and we appreciate it.

We look forward to a bright and prosperous 2007 for everyone and for our region too. Happy New Year!
