Cut cable causes phone and E-911 service interruption
By Evan Carden SA Editor

A fiber optic cable was cut, Tuesday, causing disruption to the E-911 service in Clarke County as well as long distance phone and Internet service.

According to Clarke County E-911 Director Becky Neugent, the incident occurred around 5 p.m. when a contractor working for the state near AC Fabricated Products accidentally cut the cable. E-911 service was down until 12:15 a.m., Wednesday, with long distance and Internet service restored approximately three hours later.

Some emergency calls were rerouted to Wilcox County E-

911 and in some instances callers were instructed to contact their local police departments. Other calls were routed directly to the E-911 center via its regular telephone number. Neugent said Grove Hill residents were isolated because the town is receives service from an independent telephone provider.

Neugent also said all fire departments in the county were paged out to be made aware of the situation.
