Clarke Commission looking at possibility of regional airport Clarke County commissioners voted during Tuesday's meeting in favor of partnering with Grove Hill and Thomasville to possibly build a regional airport in the county. "I think we need to partner with them and also support Jackson in their efforts to maintain their airport," Commissioner Rhondel Rhone stated. Commission Chairman Paul Bradford agreed, adding, "I want the people in this county to know we will help Jackson, but if we can get a regional airport here, then that's going to benefit us." Community center Residents of Barlow Bend approached commissioners requesting help in securing grant funds through the Parks and Recreation Board to build a community center. Land has been given for the community center, which is also supposed to serve as a fire station and shelter, but in order to receive funding from the Parks and Recreation Board, the land would have to be owned by the county or a municipality. It was suggested that the land could be given to the county and then leased to the community group, but as attorney Bruce Wilson pointed out, that would mean the county would own the center and have certain liability risks. A meeting was scheduled with the board to see if other arrangements could be made in order for the group to secure funding for the center. Other business The cities of Jackson and Thomasville asked commissioners if the county would consider buying trucks off the state bid list and then leasing them to the municipalities. It was decided that County Engineer Sam Noble would work with the municipalities in trying to secure lower bids rather than have the county leasing out trucks. Approval was given for Noble to advertise openings for a laborer and superintendent's position in the road and bridge department. Approval was given for the position of security guard at the courthouse to be filled.
In addition to Christmas day, Dec. 25, the courthouse will be closed Dec. 26 so electrical wiring can be changed.
