Christmas season kicks off in Jackson
The Christmas season officially kicked off in Jackson, this past Saturday, with a special tree lighting ceremony in front of the old Skipper Fire Station downtown. Mayor Richard Long and the members of the Jackson City Council welcomed between 200 and 300 people to the event, which featured the Christmas tree recently purchased by the city. Mayor Long gave the command to "light that tree" following his comments. Special music for the event was provided by Jessica Williams, as well as choirs from the local schools. Darren Williams served as musical director. Santa Claus made his first appearance in Jackson with children lining up to tell him what they hoped to receive on Christmas morning. Parents were given the opportunity to take their child's photo with the jolly ole' elf as well. Refreshments were offered for sale during the event from a portable booth provided by Pepsi. The event was planned by the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce, which is putting forth an effort to encourage shoppers to visit businesses in the downtown area. During Tuesday's city council meeting, Mayor Long thanked the chamber for its efforts and commended them for putting together the special event. Jackson's Christmas parade is the next event planned for the season. (SA photos by Evan Carden)
