Book of historic homes presented to WashCo Museum

Barbara Waddell (left), curatorWashington County Museum, accepts Historical Homes Survey from Ellen Williams (right).
The board of directors of the Washington County Historical Society met on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 12, at the Genealogical Library in Chatom.

The main order of business was the updating of the by-laws of the corporation. The Washington County Historical Society was incorporated in 1982.

A major project of the WCHS has been the photographing and documenting of Washington

County's historic homes. The Alabama Historical Commission considers any home constructed before 1940 as a historic structure.

During the meeting, Ellen Williams presented the board with two books containing photos and historical documentation of homes in three communities: Leroy, Fruitdale and Yellow Pine. Barbara Waddell, curator of the Washington County

Museum, accepted the books and she will place those in the museum housed in the basement of the courthouse.

Doris Brown has documented the historic homes in Chatom previously. Citizens may view these books on the premises of the museum.

The next meeting of the society will be the second Sunday afternoon of February, 2007.
