Cops looking for suspects in Scyrene grocery robbery

Clarke County lawmen are looking for two men who robbed Garrick Corner Grocery in Scyrene Thursday night and the driver of the get-away car.

According to owner Cindy Garrick, two men, both with their faces and hands covered, and one carrying a shotgun entered the store and asked a customer to open the register. When he told them he didn't work there, they found the cashier and ordered her to open the cash register.

It is believed the robbers were familiar with the business because they knew extra cash was kept on hand to cash payroll checks on Thursdays and they also knew where the kitchen was. When Laura Newton, the cashier, attempted to press the alarm button, one of the men told her not to.

As she was handing them the money, it is believed a vehicle that drove up to the store frightened them and they left with some cash. Before exiting the store they fired a shot, which hit the door facing.

Officers believe a vehicle was waiting for the two men on a nearby dirt road.

Investigator Vergil Chapman with the Clarke County Sheriff's Department said they know the men had a long barrel shotgun and they believe they fled down County Road 35 in a white Grand Prix or Crown Victoria.

Anyone with any information about the robbery is asked to call Chapman at the Clarke County Sheriff's Department, 251-275- 8132.
