Clarke County cages the Lions
By Ross Wood Democrat Sports Editor

The Clarke County High School Bulldogs had no trouble this past Friday night as they ran though Central- Hayneville 49-0, spoiling the Lions' homecoming celebration and allowing the Bulldogs to complete the region slate with an unblemished record.

The first time the CCHS offense touched the ball they scored all the points they would need when Tim Barnette raced 65 yards for the Bulldogs 'touchdown. Terrance Frazier ran in the two-point conversion to make the score 8-0 with 10:08 left in the first.

On the Lions' first play Frazier picked the ball off in the flats and returned 35 yards for the score. Tyler Walker tossed Duane Owens the twopoint conversion to double the score to 16-0 with 9:42 left in the opening period.

The defense stepped it up again on the next Central possession as Will Dannelly picked off the Lion pass and returned it to the 25-yard line.

Walker's fourth down pass was intercepted in the end zone, giving Hayneville the ball at the 20-yard line.

On fourth down the ball sailed over the punter's head and through the end zone for the safety, increasing the lead to 18-0 with 6:14 to go in the period.

Minutes later Leonard Gildersleeve scooped up a Lion fumble at the 2-yard line and rambled in for the touchdown. Kenneth Kimbrough ran

in the two-point conversion, tightening the stranglehold to 26-0 with 3:06 to go in the first quarter.

Early in the second frame the Bulldog offense hit pay dirt again as Kimbrough scored on a 3-yard run. The try for two came up short, but CCHS had a 32-0 advantage.

Later in the quarter Barnette found the end zone for the second time in the game as he scored from 8 yards out. Again the try for two was no good, but with 4:45 to go before halftime CCHS led 38-0.

Daniel Bedwell ended the scoring for the half with :41 seconds to go with a 1-yard sneak. Frazier added the twopoint run and the Bulldogs took a 46-0 lead into the break.

In the third quarter the Clarke County offense held the ball the entire time and with 8:04 left to go in the game Dwight Chapman kicked the 17-yard field to make the final score 49-0.

Barnette led all rushers with 102 yards on four carries and two TDs.

This Friday the Bulldogs (7- 2, 7-0) renew the oldest running rivalry in the state when they host the Thomasville Tigers (8-1, 6-1) in the Backyard Brawl.

The Tigers have won the last three and seven of the last 10 games in the series that dates back to 1917. It will be the 91st meeting between the two schools.

Game time at H.G. Prim Stadium is 7 p.m.
