Aggies play 'smashmouth' with Evergreen

Good football teams figure out a way to win close ball games at the end and the Jackson Aggies did just that Friday as they came from behind to beat the Jaguars of Hillcrest-Evergreen 15-14 on the road in Evergreen last Friday night.

The Aggies had a chance to tie the game after Kent Myer hit DeMarcus Besteda with a 34-yard touchdown pass with 7:23 remaining in the game. But the try for two came up just short, leaving the Jags with a 14-12 lead.

It was Myer's 15th TD pass of the season.

It took a big play from the Jackson defense to give the team another shot as Desirae Robinson recovered a Hillcrest fumble near midfield.

From there Jackson chewed up yardage and 4:43 of the clock as they drove to the opponent's goal.

The drive stalled at the 9- yard line after Besteda's catch in the corner was ruled incomplete.

The Aggies called on freshman J.D. Mitchell to come on and kick the game winner from 26 yards out, giving Jackson a thrilling 15-14 region win.

It was the second time this season Mitchell has kicked a game winner in the closing seconds of a game. In week five he kicked one to beat Clarke County 23-20.

Tailback Andrew Ezell scored on a 62-yard run in the second quarter to bring the Aggies to within one point 7-6 after the attempt sailed wide.

Hillcrest scored in the first quarter on a 25-yard TD pass from Derrick Page to Neal Pressley. In the third quarter Page scored on a 5-yard keeper.

For the game Ezell finished with 165 yards on 22 carries and a score.

Myer was 11-of-19 passing for 111 yards and a TD. Besteda hauled four passes for 70 yards and a score.

Also, Myer is coming off of a game against W.S. Neal in which he went 25-40 for 327 passing yards, including six touchdown passes.

"I am proud of the way that we came from behind to beat Hillcrest on the road for their homecoming," said Coach John Blackmon. "We probably did not play as well as we should have.

"I am looking forward to going on the road to face a good calibar playoff team in Jemison. We are disappointed we did not make the playoffs, but we need to make the best of this situation."

The Aggies (4-5, 3-4) finish out the season this Friday as they make the long road trip to Jemison to take on the Panthers (6-3, 6-1).
