Two die as result of WashCo wrecks A Citronelle man and a Wagarville man are dead following two automobile crashes that occurred on Washington County roads within five days of each other. According to the Alabama Department of Public Safety's Information Officer Trooper Joe Piggott, Steve Arthur Johnson, 28, of Wagarville, died around 2:35 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 15, from injuries he sustained in a wreck that occurred Oct. 12 approximately one mile south of McIntosh. The crash occurred at 4:15 p.m., as Johnson was traveling north on U.S. Highway 43 and lost control of his 1995 Honda Accord near Richard Seals Road. Johnson's vehicle left the roadway and overturned, ejecting him. According to Piggott, he was not wearing a seat belt. Speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash, while alcohol involvement is not suspected. A second crash, Monday, Oct. 16, on John Johnson Road near Price Rivers Road, claimed the life of Jessie Collins Campbell, 23, of Citronelle. According to Trooper Piggott, Campbell was traveling north in a 1994 Nissan Maxima when he collided nearly head-on with a 1990 Mack truck around 5:15 a.m., which was headed southbound. He was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt. The driver of the truck, Raymond Johnson, 58, of McIntosh received minor injuries in the crash and was transported to Springhill Memorial Hospital in Mobile.
According to Piggott, a light rain had begun to fall at the time the wreck occurred, which may have been a contributing factor. Alcohol is not believed to have been involved.
