The Washington County Association of Volunteer Firefighters conducted its annual awards banquet Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Chatom Community Center and presented awards to those chosen as the top firefighters in the county.

Firefighter of the Year

David Odom, a member of the Fairford Volunteer Fire Department, was chosen as Firefighter of the Year. He has been with the department since it was established in 1992 and serves as its treasurer.

"This award was quite a surprise to me and an honor," he said.

Odom said he decided to become a volunteer firefighter because he enjoys helping others and wanted to do work within the community.

He and his wife, Addie have one son, Ronnie Morris and a grandson, David Gerrel Morris.

Curtis Ard had the honor of being named Fire Chief of the Year.

Ard is the chief of the Fruitdale Fire Department, which was presented with the Fire Department of the Year Award.

Ard said he was surprised to be named Fire Chief of the Year. "I had no idea I had been nominated," he said.

With at total of 32 years as a firefighter under his belt, Ard helped plan and put in place the Fruitdale Department in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The department began operations in 1991.

Ard said he always wanted to be a firefighter, but couldn't do it full-time, so he decided to volunteer. "That's the next best thing to being a paid fireman," he said.

Concerning the department's award, he said, "We have a great group of firefighters. I thank each and every one of them for their dedication to the department. I believe this award is a good morale booster for them."

Fire Officer of the Year

Leroy's Assistant Fire Chief, Gregg Stokes was named Fire Officer of the Year.

"I was shocked and honored to be chosen to receive this award," said Stokes, who is also a member of Ciba's emergency response team. "I believe if you can help people in the community, you should," he added.

Stokes, who recently underwent a kidney transplant, has been an active member of the Leroy Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years. He and his wife, Rebecca have two sons, Christopher and Stephen.

The Ronnie Brown

EMS Award

McIntosh Fire Chief Robbie Davidson was the recipient of the Ronnie Brown EMS Award. He has been a volunteer firefighter and rescue squad member for 25 years.

"I feel humbled by receiving this award," he said. "I have won state awards, as well as awards in Mobile County when I was employed there, but this is the first time I have received an award in my home county. This really makes me feel good. Ronnie Brown was a good man who loved Washington County and I am honored to receive the award named for him."

Davidson, who has served as McIntosh Fire Chief for six years, said he attributes his desire to help the community in such a capacity to his mother, Marsha Davidson. "She was a member of the first group of trained EMTs (emergency medical technicians) in Alabama, when the certification program began in 1972," he said.

Davidson and his wife, Shannon have two daughters, Sarah and Samantha.
