It's official; Walgreens to locate in Jackson
By Evan Carden SA Editor

The nearly vacant building behind the College Avenue Shell Station and the old armory/hardware store will be torn down to make way for the new Walgreens Pharmacy.
It's official. Walgreen's will locate one of its pharmacies in Jackson.

Mayor Long said the final paperwork completing the deal for the sale of property behind the College Avenue Shell Station was signed Friday morning, Sept. 29. "According to the terms of the agreement, all property must be vacated within 30 days," said Long. "It is my understanding that the nearly vacant building behind the Shell Station and the old armory/hardware store will be torn down and the new pharmacy will be built there."

According to information received by Long, construction on the 10,500 square foot building is planned to begin Jan. 2, 2007, with the store opening July 1. Motorists will have access to the new store from U.S. Highway 43 and College Avenue. The mayor said he was told by a Walgreens official that the store would employ between 35-40 people.

Walgreens was founded by Charles R. Walgreen Sr. in 1901 in Chicago, Ill. A second store was opened in the windy city in 1910.

By 1913, Walgreens had grown to four stores, all on Chicago's South Side. The fifth Walgreen's opened in 1915 and the ninth in 1916. By 1919, there were 20 stores in the rapidly growing chain.

By 1920 Walgreens was an established fixture on Chicago's retail scene. Throughout that decade, Walgreens underwent phenomenal growth. By 1929, the total number of Walgreens stores had reached 525, with locations in New York City, Florida and other major markets.

Walgreens was among the very first American companies to establish profit sharing and pension plans, to assure security for its employees and by 1984 had opened its 1,000th store .

Today, the drugstore chain is opening an average of 425 new stores annually, with its 7,000th planned to open by 2010.
