Clarke Prep drives over Taylor Road
In the game there were 118 offensive snaps and 919 yards gained between the two schools. The game was played in Montgomery on the campus of Goodwin Middle School. The Tigers actually had 27 more snaps in the contest than the Gators. Taylor Road had the ball first and drove down to score to take an 8-0 lead. The Gators responded to tie the game when Adam Jordan recovered a CPS fumble in the end zone. The score capped three-play, 60-yard drive. Wesley Morgan ran in the twopoint conversion to knot the game at 8-8. Later in the period Chad Dickinson intercepted a Tiger pass to end a drive that set up the next scoring chance for the Gators. Clarke Prep stayed with their vaunted ground attack as they moved 61 yards in five plays. Brett Bradford capped the drive with a 9-yard run. Dickinson ran in the two-point conversion and the Gators doubled their lead to 16-8 with just under a minute left in the first quarter. In the second quarter the Gators put the game out of reach as they scored 23-unanswered points. Following a punt from Taylor Road, Clarke Prep needed just two plays to hit pay dirt. Bradford went 71 yards on the first play to set up a 3-yard dive by Morgan. Bradford ran in the two-point conversion to increase the lead to 24-8. Midway through the period the Gators started at midfield and made quick work of the Tiger defense as Bradford scored on a 9-yard run to end the short drive. Hunter Mayton kicked the PAT as Clarke Prep tightened the screws 31-8. Just before the break Morgan scored on a 5-yard run and caught the two-point pass from Dickinson as the Gators took a 39-8 lead into halftime. In the second half Taylor Becton took the opening kickoff and returned it 50 yards to give CPS the ball at the Tiger 38-yard line. On the first play Dickinson hit Becton for the TD pass covering the full distance. Mayton kicked the PAT and the Gators increased their stranglehold to 46-8. Taylor Road answered with a TD pass to cut the lead to 46- 14. Clarke Prep responded on the ensuing kick off as Becton took the Tiger offering and raced 85 yards for the touchdown. Mayton again converted the kick and the Gators had the game well in hand 53-14. The two schools traded touchdowns through the remainder of the period as Taylor Road scored, but missed the conversion, cutting it to 53- 20. The Gators answered when Morgan raced 66 yards on the ensuing drive. Mayton remained perfect with his kicks as the lead was increased to 60- 20. The Tigers added a TD with 2:26 left in the third and added the two-point conversion to draw closer 60-28. Marc Lear capped the game's scoring in the fourth quarter with a 7-yard run. The kick from Mayton was again good and the Gators easliy won the region contest 67-28. This Friday the Gators (3-2, 2-2) have a chance to beat defending AAA state champ Morgan as the Senators come calling. Morgan (3-2, 2-2) lost last week to Faith Academy.
