Bulldogs chomp up the Wildcats
The game started with Sumter County going three-and-out. Washington County got the ball and drove it 58 yards before Eric Barnes scored from 8 yards out. Washington County went for two but failed. The Bulldogs led 6 0. Sumter County got the ball on their own 36-yard line, but again they failed to gain a first down and were forced to punt. Washington County's next drive was halted on third down when the pass from Kyle Pennington to Drake Warr was called back on offensive pass interference, bringing up fourth down. Sumter Co. got the ball on their own 27 but could not manage a first down against the Bulldogs' stifling defense. Washington County got the ball back on the Sumter County 36 and seven plays later Pennington found Tyler Dykes in the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown pass. Simeon Williamson ran in the two-point conversion, and the score was 14-0 with 10:22 remaining in the half. On Sumter County's next drive they fumbled the ball on the second play and Dan Bowman was there to recover it for the Bulldogs. Washington County could not capitalize and were forced to punt. After a Sumter County threeand out, the Bulldogs took over on the Sumter County 5 and two plays later scored on Marcelis Richards' 2-yard run. Trey Courington cameon for the PAT and the Bulldogs led 21 - 0. Sumter County got their first first down with only two minutes remaining in the first half, but they couldn't get anything else on the drive and gave the ball back to the Bulldogs on the 46. The Bulldogs punched it in three plays later. After a 42-yard pass from Pennington to Warr, Pennington spiked the ball to kill the clock. On the next play, Justin Byrd ran it in for the touchdown with 13.8 seconds remaining in the half. Pennington found Davin Green in the back corner of the end zone for the two-pt conversion and the score was 29-0 headed to halftime. As they have done in their previous wins this year, Washington County came out in the third quarter and put the game away. They got the ball first and scored on their first play from scrimmage. Marcelis Richards took the handoff and raced 71 yards for the score. Courington's point after was no good and the score was 35-0. Sumter County's first possesion of the second half was another three-and-out. Washington County got the ball on their own 36-yard line and drove the ball down the field on the ground before Pennington and Dykes hooked up again, this time for a 12-yard touchdown. The PAT was no good and the Bulldogs were rolling 41-0 with 6:33 remaining in the third quarter. The Bulldogs subbed in their second string for the rest of the game. Sumter County managed to score twice in the last 1:36 of the third quarter to bring the score to 41-14. Neither team could score in the fourth quarter. Pennington and Dykes, who have connected for five touchdowns this year, both stated that the offensive line was the reason for their success.
Coach Wofford said he was pleased with his team's performance. "We came out and gave a solid team effort. There's nothing more you can ask for."
