Meeting to address erosion problems on Tombigbee

A meeting concerning erosion problems along the Tombigbee River will be held in Livingston Monday, Oct. 2 from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. at the University of West Alabama's Environmental Training Center. The meeting is sponsored by the Clean Water Partnership Stakeholders.

A grant has been obtained to study the erosion problem along the river to see if anything can be done about it.

This is the fifth meeting in a series of 10 to allow property owners and others to learn about issues that impact stream bank erosion in the Tombigbee Basin.

This meeting will address the economic impact of the Tombigbee Waterway, tax credits, property taxes and other related issues.

Thomas Griffith, Administrator of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Authority will speak on the economic impacts. Choctaw County Revenue Commissioner David Sparrow will be in attendance as will Bill Bass with the Alabama Department of Revenue. Bass will discuss various tax incentives.

All stakeholders are encouraged to participate in this educational

process and the working committees which will assist in developing the plan of action for the next phase.

As in prior meetings everyone wishing to speak at the meeting will be given five minutes for their presentation. Those wishing to speak should have a written statement to give to the meeting facilitator. Anyone not wishing to speak but wanting to comment may turn in a written statement. Upon arrival sign in and indicate your desire.

Ameeting was held Aug. 31 in Grove Hill but was not properly publicized and as a result was poorly attended. A meeting may be held in the future in Jackson.

Directions to the Livingston location: From Interstate 20/59 head east on Highway 28. Go approximately one mile and take a right immediately past the Western Inn Motel on Country Club Drive. Go approximately three quarters of a mile and take the first paved road to the left. This road goes between two brick entry pillars, pass a new apartment building on the right, and at the top of the hill the pavement will end then bear to the right on a slag road. It will go straight to the training center.
