After Oct. 1, life will be a great deal different for Jackson High School Principal Robert Hagood.

The top administrator at the school will retire and begin a new phase in his life. "I've been going to school since 1954," said Hagood. "That's a long time. It'll be good to sleep in for a change."

Hagood has walked the halls of JHS for 17 years. He has spent a total of 35 years as an educator.

Before coming to Jackson, he spent a number of years in the Selma school system, first working as a history teacher at the junior high school there then becoming assistant principal. He then accepted the position of assistant principal and eventually principal at Selma High School.

"When this job came open we jumped at the chance to move to a smaller town," said Hagood. "My wife, Joann, is a native of Washington County and we wanted to raise our children in a small town environment."

Joann Hagood, who taught journalism at JHS, retired last year. Their son, Lee and daughter Mary-Katherine are both in college. "I figured the time was right," said Hagood.

A career in education was not a hard choice for the retiring principal to make. His mother was a teacher, who actually taught him in first grade. "I couldn't get away with nothing, because I had to go home with her," he laughed.

Through the years Hagood said the main thing he has enjoyed about being an educator and administrator is dealing with the students and staff members. "We have a great staff here at JHS and I've seen a lot of great students come through these doors," he said. "I've had some great experiences with many of the students here. In the end it's all about the people."

Besides sleeping in some, Hagood said he looks forward to doing some things he has been wanting to do. "Joann and I made a trip to Europe a few years ago," he said. "I'd like to revisit it. We're also looking at taking an Alaskan tour cruise. But, one thing I enjoy a lot that I'm looking forward to doing more of is going fishing. I sold my boat years ago, so now I may be in the market for a new one."

A reception in Hagood's honor was held at the Kimbell House Wednesday afternoon.
