This is the busiest time of year
This week we have Jackson High School's homecoming, with a parade, bonfire and powder puff football game, Thursday, followed by the big game Friday night against county rivals the Clarke County High Bulldogs. The students have gone all out for this year's game, making huge banners, which are hung on the front of the school. The homecoming court will be presented Friday night and I'm sure you'll be able to feel the electricity in the air when the players take the field. October, as always, is an interesting month in Jackson. Fire Prevention Week will take front seat on the month's events, with their annual banquet and parade. Jackson folks love a parade, so they love this time of year. I would just like to caution everyone to be careful and watch your children, so that they enjoy the parades of the season while keeping them out of the street! We don't want anyone getting hurt. Other local events include fund-raisers for the Ronald McDonald House and the annual White Smith Memorial Library Benefit Auction, both of which take place next week. If you've never been to either of these events, you don't know what you are missing. For auction lovers they can't be beat. Both go for good causes, so if you want a nice night out, you've got two great opportunities. Let's not forget the annual Fall Festival, which takes place the first weekend in November. There's always lots of fun, food and entertainment for the entire family. Just look at how fast September blew by. Before you know it the streets of downtown Jackson will be filled with crowds checking out the classic cars, arts and crafts sales and good eats, as well as the annual lumberjack competition. LaShaunda Holly, director of the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce tells me it's still not too late to reserve a booth for this year's event. City's finances looking good The Jackson City Council approved its budget for the 2007 fiscal year, Tuesday. It is encouraging to see that the city actually had excess money to carry over into the new fiscal year. That our elected officials are doing their jobs by keeping us on the good side of the financial spectrum. Revenue for the city increased substantially during the past year, which shows that business is booming in Jackson. Let's hope we stay on this track as we move forward. It is great to see new businesses opening up all over town. There's been the addition of a new motorcycle/ATV dealer, a gun and pawn shop, and a new restaurant will soon open on College Avenue. All this growth is welcome and I hope to see more in the future, with the hopes that some of it comes in the form of new industry. Work is progressing on the new industrial park located on Highway 177, which I believe is an excellent location. With access to water and sewer and a spec building on site, the chances of Jackson enticing new companies to locate here will greatly increase. The new RV park, also located on Highway 177, is a nice addition to the town as well. It can be used as a tool to bring visitors in to take advantage of the hunting and fishing opportunities nearby. The location is excellent in relation to the Jackson Landing and once the city completes its plan to develop the waterfront, I'll bet there won't be enough spaces to go around.
If you read this week's city council story, the mayor points to many of the things accomplished by the city this year. The list, to say the least, is very impressive. Growth is always a good thing, especially in an area such as ours, which is in need of new jobs and career opportunities for future generations.
