Plans made for Fire Prevention Week
This year's theme focuses on cooking fires in the home. According to the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Most cooking fires start with the ignition of common household items (e.g., food or grease, wall coverings, paper or plastic bags, curtains, etc.). Between 1999-2002 there were 114,000 reported home fires associated with cooking equipment each year, resulting in 290 deaths and 4,380 injuries. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home cooking fires. During the next several weeks the Jackson Fire Department will be providing safety tips for cooking safely and promoting fire safety awareness. The Jackson Fire Department announces activities for Fire Prevention Week. The chairman of this year's fund-raising drive is John Brown. Letters will be mailed to every household in the Jackson area requesting donations. Each letter will include a self-addressed envelope to the fire department in which residents may place their contributions. All donations will be greatly appreciated. The Jackson Fire Department will begin the week's activities with church inspections on Oct. 8. Following inspections the department will attend a church service together. On Monday, October 9, out of town fire inspectors will begin to arrive. The annual banquet at the at the H.W. Pearce Memorial Park Assembly House is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 10. The Fire Prevention Queen and her Court for 2006 will be presented at the banquet. Visiting fire inspectors will also be welcomed. Fire Prevention Day will be Wednesday, Oct. 11. The Jackson Fire Department will conduct inspections of businesses, schools, etc. with the help of the out of town inspectors followed by the annual Fire Prevention Parade at 3:30 p.m. For information about the parade or to reserve a place please contact Harold Everhart at 769-2730, Daron Bolen at 2463073 or Landon Hilt at 246-9133. The lineup for the parade is the same as last year and will begin at 2:30 p.m.
The Jackson Fire Department encourages participation in the parade.
