Make sure residence's address is visible for emergency services

The Clarke County E-911 Board of Directors recently issued a call to homeowners to make sure their 911 addresses are visible on the front of their homes or mailboxes.

These numbers can be crucial and having the numbers accurate and visible from the highway could make a difference in a lawman, firefighter or ambulance personnel responding to an emergency call.

The time these emergency responders have to take to hunt an address or stop and ask questions if they can't see an address could mean the difference in life or death, or property being saved or lost.

In addition to being visible, the numbers should also be of a reflective material so that they can be seen easily at night.

On a related note, Jackson Emergency Transport Service (JETS) was recently the recipient of a federally funded Global Positioning System (GPS) that will help emergency medical personnel responded faster and more accurately to calls, either at residences or businesses, or to accidents on area highways.

Clarke County has been mapped for GPS and the new system provides a moving map display in the ambulances that can pinpoint sites and detail the most efficient route to get to them.

This is great technology and we are glad our area is benefiting from it.

But don't forget the less technical step you must take as a homeowner to help ensure your safety- make sure your house's address is properly displayed!
