WashCo Commission looks to fill several jobs The Washington County Commission met in regular session on Sept. 11. During the course of the meeting, they announced several positions for which they will be advertising soon. Katrina Grant The commission will place ads for an engineer, a utility person and a clerical-office assistant to work with the three prongs of the Katrina Grant: replacing mobile homes (plumbing and electrical), roads and roofs to homes. The clerical assistant position will pay $8 an hour and this person will also work with Long Term Recovery. Engineering Aid III The commission passed a resolution to hire an Engineer-ing Aid III for the Road and Bridge Department. The range of pay was set at a grade 10, $14.79. Solid waste personnel The commission also passed a resolution to bring two personnel into the Solid Waste Department at grades 7 and 5 respectively. These individuals are already working in a quasicounty capacity, but will be put into the system proper with this move. Other Business +The court of commissioners voted to grant .58 and 1.0 acres of right of way to Olin Corporation by Quit-Claim deed. Judge John A. Armstrong explained that this was property that had previously been granted to the commission by Olin. +Judge Armstrong stated that the bid-letting will begin Sept. 29 for the bridge at Roberts Creek. The bridge will cost $372,170; $297,736 federal money and $74,434 county funds. +The commission passed a resolution approving the FEMA Flood Insurance. Commissioner Bailey explained that unless the commission put such an approval in place, residents cannot purchase flood insurance. The county's flood plane management regulations must meet or exceed the national flood insurance requirements. +Judge Armstrong informed the commissioners that Stewart Jackson, EMA director also serves as Washington County's Homeland Security director. Jackson has notified the commission that each person on the governing body must pass NIMS (National Incident Management System) certification which will require them to take a course on-line offered from FEMA unless the Alabama State Board of Commissioners makes arrangements for this course to be taught by instructors. +Commissioner Hilton Robbins informed the group that New Light Baptist Church owns the land in Deer Park where there is interest in building a memorial park. +Probate Judge-Elect Charles Singleton has inquired as to whether the newly hired county engineer, Jason Strudivant, will be involved in the proposed 800 megahertz communication system which the former engineer, Bob Gunter had been instrumental in getting in place. Judge Armstrong told the commission that Sturdivant needs to be informed of this and that it will consume "some" time. Solid Waste meeting The commission reconvened at 2 p.m. in their capacity as members of the Solid Waste Department Board of Directors. The business discussed was a letter from Chief Taylor of the MOWA Band of Choctaws in which the MOWA's expressed a desire to partner with the county in the construction of a solid waste landfill. The board will have a meeting in the near future with the Band of MOWA's to look into this further. The judge reported that the Solid Waste Department is up in collections and 62 new accounts have been signed on.
The commission's next meeting is scheduled for Sept. 25 at 10 a.m.
