City to submit list of sites for possible EADS offshoots
By Evan Carden SA Editor

During Tuesday's city council meeting, Jackson Mayor Richard Long reported that the city had received a request from the state for a list of industrial sites in Jackson that meet the EADS (European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co.) Project specifications.

Earlier this year, EADS North America announced it had chosen Mobile's Brookley Industrial Complex as as the site for its KC-330 advanced tanker U.S. production facility. The announcement sparked interest in the counties north of Mobile about possible support production facilities to provide services and parts for the main plant.

Jackson is currently developing a new industrial park on Highway 177, which will include a 50,000 square foot spec building. The new park will have access to the city's water and sewer system.

"We are forwarding the information to Debra Bolen, Clarke County Development Foundation executive for submission to the state," said Long.

Vandals break street light

During his report to the council Mayor Long said that several individuals

had climbed up on the rooftop next to Gabe's Computers downtown and threw objects down and knocked the top out of a decorative street light. "I don't believe they were throwing at the light," said Long. "I would appreciate any information that anyone has concerning this incident, as we will prosecute the individuals. Any individuals found on rooftops will be charged with trespassing."

Airport tree removal

A contract was approved by the council for $128,000 for the removal of trees from approximately 66 acres at

the north end of the runway at the William E. Stewart Airport. The tree removal was approved to meet safety specifications to help bring the airport to the point where it can possibly attain regional classification. Cost for tree removal will be paid for with funds from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant received by the city.

City Administrator Jesse Miller said Nichols Timber Company was chosen over the lowest bidder because it would remove the trees in a manner that complies with EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) standards. He said the trees are located in a designated wetland area.

In other business:

*White Smith Library Director Debra Grayson requested a 1/3 match for a $7,500 grant recently received by the library, which will be used to purchase four new computers. Members of the council agreed that the $2,500 match will be included in the upcoming fiscal year's budget.

*Regions Bank was approved as the paying agent for the city's 1991 and 2002 general obligation warrants. Long said the reasoning for the change was that SouthWest Bank had been bought out by U.S. Bank, which is based in New York. "We would rather stay with a locally owned and operated facility," he added. He pointed out that Regions had approached the city about the change.

*Several changes in the city's employee personnel manual will be considered at the next meeting.

*The purchase of a new street sweeper at a cost of $118,854.75 from Ingram Equipment was approved. Public Works Director Kevin Woodson said the new sweeper uses air instead of large brooms to remove dirt and debris from the street, therefore it would be easier to operate on some streets where the truck previously operated by the city would not.

*The striping of the portion of Walker Springs Road that lies within the city limits will be considered at the next meeting.

*A petition was presented to the council from residents on McGee Drive requesting speed bumps be placed there to slow traffic through the neighborhood. Several citizens attended the meeting and stated that there has been a problem with speeding on the street. Woodson and Police Chief Charles Burge were asked to assess the situation. Burge said patrols would focus on the area and he asked permission to place the city's speed and traffic counter on the street for a limited time.

*A budget work session was scheduled for Sept. 20 at 5 p.m.

*A request for an alcohol license for the off-premises sale of wine an beer at the Pic N Sav grocery store will be considered at the next meeting.
