Butlerfest 2006 set for Nov. 3-4

The city of Butler is planning their third annual Butlerfest/Memphis in May Event.

The event will be conducted along the historic downtown square and is scheduled for Nov. 3-4.

Activities for all ages include a 5K run and fun walk, car show, historical walking tour of downtown Butler, arts and crafts, food vendors, carnival with rides, sauce competition, barbecue and a street dance on Friday and Saturday nights sponsored by WINN98.

The barbecue Cookoff begins on Friday with the Backyard Division. This group will be cooking ribs and chicken for judging and is less structured than the Memphis In May Event. Friday afternoon, the "Little Porkers" Challenge will be conducted for ages 7-14. They will build the "ultimate burger."

Also on Friday will be the "Memphis In May Event". This competition is very structured with rules and regulations. Competitors will compete in three categories: whole hog, ribs and shoulder.

"The Best Dressed Pig Contest" includes purchasing a pink pig head to be dressed by individuals participating in the contest. These pigs will be used to advertise the Butlerfest in the upcoming weeks and is a great way to show some great piggy art. To purchase a pig's head from Shelia Hutchinson, call 205-459-2999 or call city hall at 205-459-3795.

For more information on the cooking events call Butler City Hall at 205-459-3795, e-mail butlercityhall@tds.net or call the local chamber of commerce at 205-459-3459.
