Panthers fall hard in opener to A.L. Johnson Eagles The Coffeeville Panthers began their season in harsh fashion as the Eagles from A.L. Johnson of Thomaston came to Coffeeville and defeated Coach Walter Rozier's Panthers 58-6. The Eagles came out and scored early and often as they put up 58 first half points on the Coffeeville Panthers. Coffeeville's only score came in the first quarter of play when Michael Thomas returned an ensuing kick off 90 yards for a touchdown with 2:00 on the clock. The Panthers attempted a two-point conversion, but it failed. Coffeeville took a sharp hit in the middle of the second quarter when team-leading quarterback Michael Thomas was ejected from the ballgame. At halftime, A.L. Johnson led 58-6, and that would turn out to be the final score from Coffeeville. "Our boys came out and played very hard against A.L. Johnson," said Coach Rozier. "We have to look toward next week when we open up in region play against Marengo in Dixon Mills. We have to learn to bond together with each other before we are going to be a winning ball team." Coffeeville will look ahead at the next four region games against Marengo, J.U. Blacksher and J.F. Shields before the next non-region game against John Essex. "We treated this game like a preseason game," said Rozier. "We needed a game situation to prepare us and this was it."
"I think we have what it takes to become a stronger ball team, but our boys are going to have to grow up quick this season," said Assistant Coach Gerald Howze.
