The Washington County Bulldogs opened the 2006 football season Friday night against the McIntosh Demons at Jordan-Wilcox Stadium.

Both teams were trying to start the season off with a W, but only one could be victorious as Washington County defeated the McIntosh Demons 40 - 18.

McIntosh got the ball first at their 11-yard line. The Demons kept it on the ground for the first couple of plays as Quinton Echols picked up 6 yards on a couple hand-offs up the middle. Then on third down, the Demons fumbled the ball and the Bulldogs recovered it on the McIntosh 5-yard line. Four plays later, Justin Byrd ran it in from 4 yards out for the touchdown. The extra point was no good and the Bulldogs led 6-0.

It didn't take McIntosh long to answer, as Michael Bolton and Anthony Barnes connected on a 65-yard touchdown pass on the very next play. McIntosh missed the extra point and the teams were tied 6 -6.

On Washington County's next possession, they fumbled the ball away on the first play. McIntosh took over on the 36- yard line. McIntosh opened with a pass again, this time Bolton found Ronald Broussard for 24 yards. A couple plays later, Bolton and Broussard hooked up again for a 6-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was no good and McIntosh led 12-6.

Washington County showed they could pass too, as Kyle Pennington found Tyler Dykes down the left sideline for a 53- yard completion. Simeon Williamson took the hand-off on the next play and ran it in for the touchdown from 5 yards out. Washington County went for the two-point conversion and they were successful. The Bulldogs led 14 -12 with 5:23 remaining in the first quarter.

McIntosh got the ball on their own 27 but fumbled it on the first play and Maurice Leverette came up with the recovery. Two plays later Washington County fumbled and gave the ball back to McIntosh. McIntosh could not capitalize on the turnover as Bolton's pass was intercepted by Kyle Dees.

The Bulldogs took over on the McIntosh 48-yard line. Washington County drove it down the field on the ground as Jarvis Abston, Marcelis Richards, Justin Byrd and Eric Barnes all ran the ball, with Barnes running it in for the touchdown from the 1-yard line. The extra point was blocked and Washington County led 20 - 12.

McIntosh completed a couple of passes to Quinton Echols before turning the ball over on downs on the Washington County 29. Washington County drove down the field and Pennington and Dykes hooked up for a 7-yard scoring strike. The extra point was no good and Washington County led 26 - 12.

McIntosh struck back on the ensuing kickoff as Anthony Barnes returned the kick 82 yards for a touchdown. McIntosh tried the two-point conversion but failed and McIntosh had pulled to within eight points at 26 - 18 with 1:28 remaining in the first half. That would be as close as McIntosh would get as the Bulldog defense stiffened for the remainder of the game.

The offenses controlled the first half, but the defenses took over in the second half as only two touchdowns were scored, both by Washington County. Pennington connected with

Dykes again for a 12-yard touchdown pass with three minutes remaining in the third quarter. Marcelis Richards closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 20-yard touchdown run. Maurice Leverette added the extra point on both touchdowns for the final score of 40-18.

McIntosh was led by Anthony Barnes who had two touchdowns, one receiving and one on a kickoff return. Washington County was led by the duo of Kyle Pennington and Tyler Dykes who hooked up on two touchdown passes. Kyle Dees led the Washington County defense with two interceptions. Eric Barnes also contributed with an interception.

Washington County Head Coach David Wofford was not pleased with his teams performance.

"We played real sloppy. We had too many turnovers and too many missed tackles. If we don't get better, we are going to be in trouble. "He did have some positive things to say about the game. "Kyle Pennington led us tonight from the quarterback position and Tyler Dykes also played well." Washington County travels to play Mobile Christian Friday

at 7 p.m. and McIntosh travels to play Frisco City.
