Grant to help Southwest Alabama residents with home energy costs People with disabilities, the elderly and low-income residents burdened by high utility bills may be eligible to receive assistance thanks to a recently announced state grant. The $55,039 grant has been awarded through the governor's office for home weatherization to the Community Action Agency of Baldwin, Escambia, Clarke, Monroe and Conecuh counties. The organization will use the funds to make home improvements such as adding insulation, replacing or repairing windows and doors, sealing air leaks and patching holes in roofs for qualified residents. In addition to lower utility bills, weatherization projects can stimulate economic development in low-income communities and improve the overall environment by reducing the use of fossil fuels. The grant was awarded from funds made available to the state through a program of the U.S. Department of Energy. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) has been designated to administer the grant.
ADECAActing Director Doni Ingram notified Cassandra Boykins, executive director of the agency, that the grant had been approved.
