WashCo Sheriff's Department to sponsor DNA evidence collection training for area The Washington County Sheriff's Department will sponsor a training seminar for the collection and utilization of DNA evidence in sexual assault investigations, Sept. 21, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Washington County Public Library in Chatom. The eight-hour course introduces law enforcement officers to concepts, terminology, practices and legal considerations related to such cases. It was developed by a team of the country's leading DNA experts on behalf of Sexual Assault Resource Services (SARS) in Minneapolis, Minn. and is supported by grants from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs. A core group of 25 law enforcement instructors is now presenting this course to officers throughout the country. The introductory-level training was designed especially for responding officers and investigators, but also has been attended by sexual assault nurse examiners, prosecutors and others involved in the initial response to sexual assaults. It offers specific practices and insight for the collection and utilization of DNA evidence, including: +Collection and preservation of DNA evidence +The role of the laboratory in DNA +Legal issues associated with DNA evidence +Collaborations (SANE, prosecutors, victims, forensic experts, etc...) This course is offered free of charge to law enforcement officers and sexual assault response team members. It will be presented by Randy Dickson, a former law enforcement officer, licensed instructor with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement and certified SARS instructor. He is the director of Critical Interaction Associates, a law enforcement training and consulting group based in Austin, Texas. Dickson has presented courses on a variety of topics and provided services to local, state and national law enforcement agencies and organizations throughout the U.S.
