Washington County Nursing Home (WCNH) was one of a small number of facilities in Alabama to receive a favorable rating from Consumer Reports magazine.

In its August issue, Consumer Reports (CR) had a special section devoted to its investigation of nursing homes around the United States, which gives readers tips for choosing a good nursing home. On a state-by-state basis, CR listed nursing homes that families should "Avoid," and those they should "Consider."

WCNH was one of only 12 facilities in Alabama listed by CR to receive the "Consider" category, and one of only three in southwest Alabama to receive this recommendation.

CR made their recommendations based upon three (3) dimensions of quality: *Deficiencies cited in each nursing home's three most recent state surveys. Because it is not uncommon for facilities to improve and then go bad again, CR looked at three surveys.

Staffing levels: To develop a single staffing score for each home, CR obtained data for three types of nursing staff-RNs, LPNs/LVNs and nurse's aides. The staffing at each home was measured in hours of nurse staffing per resident day.

Within each state, homes were scored on each dimension of quality; and for each dimension, CR identified those homes that scored in the best 10 percent and those that scored in the worst 10 percent. To be put on the potentially good homes' list, required a home to be in the best 10 percent on at least two of the three dimensions of quality and to be placed on the poorer list, a facility had to be in the lowest 10 percent on at least two of the three dimensions of quality.

WCNH is attached to and under the overall direction of the administration of the Washington County Hospital. Douglas Tanner, hospital administrator, had this to say about the nursing home's receiving the recognition from Consumer Reports. "Obviously, we're pleased that our nursing home has received positive recognition from Consumer Reports, which takes an unbiased, objective approach in all their investigations of consumer services and products. This recognition is a testament to the commitment and dedication of our nurses, certified nursing assistants and support services employees to giving our residents high quality (See HOSPITALon page 3)
