Let's make our county a cleaner place to live Next week has been set aside as Litter Awareness Week in Clarke County. One thing that upsets us here at The South Alabamian, is the fact that there is even a need for such a week. Litter is the the most senseless and preventable offense that is committed by people every day. There is no reason for it and we strongly advocate prosecution of those caught committing this crime. Actually catching someone in the act of littering is a huge problem for law enforcement. Without observing those responsible, or finding something to link them with the litter, such cases are very difficult to prosecute. Illegal dump sites and piles of litter can be found all over our county, creating an ugly landscape and a bad impression on those visiting from other areas. We should all be responsible enough not to litter. Riding down the road and throwing out a candy wrapper, cigarette butt or any other type of trash is inexcusable. Those guilty of such acts should be ashamed that you couldn't keep your discards until you reached a garbage can. Throwing empty alcohol containers onto the roadsides that means several state laws are being broken dealing with open containers in automobiles and drinking while driving.
No matter how you look at it, litter harms us all, sometimes in more ways than one.
