Searching for weapon offers new experience
We were originally told we were heading to the Gainestown area to help search for someone lost in the woods. When our group of volunteers arrived, we were greeted by Clarke County Chief Investigator Vergil Chapman who informed us we had actually been called to help search for a murder weapon. As any good newspaper person does, I naturally had brought my camera along, because you never know when a photo opportunity will arise. Chapman was very accommodating, allowing me to take photos of whatever I wanted. It's really nice when the press, volunteer groups and local officials can work together to hopefully bring forth positive results in a bad situation. Unfortunately, the murder weapon had not been found by Wednesday's press deadline. What really impressed me was the willingness of the members of the Jackson Rescue Squad to use its manpower and equipment to assist the sheriff's department. This being my first call, I didn't know exactly what to expect, but I can truly say that all of the other members present were dedicated to finding that gun. The fact that these men take time away from their families to go out and rescue people, search for drowning victims and assist law enforcement says a lot about the character each one of them display. All are just ordinary people, working every day trying to make ends meet. They do not have to do what they do, but without people like them, where would we be? I am proud to be affiliated with the Jackson Rescue Squad. As a new member, I have yet to actually go out on a rescue or recovery mission for an individual, but I am certain that my time will come. At first I was a little hesitant to join, since my job keeps me away from my family at times, since newspaper reporting is not a straight 9-5 career. Anyone who thinks it is, surely has never set foot on this side of the press. Although I hesitated, I knew the experience of actually having the opportunity to help others was one I wanted to have. So, with the support of my family I decided to join and I truly hope I can really help in some way.
There's a lot for me to learn and I'm sure it will take me awhile to catch on, but even as I approach middle age, I am still up for a new challenge. That's the way is should be, isn't it?
